The Bob hitting the trail

We have the vehicles staged at the trailheads. Last night a thrilling lightening show kept us in cars for an hour then it cleared. The forecast is for sun thru Friday.

Hey check out the drive thru guns and ammo.

Only in Montana.

We better hit the trail. Talk to you on Friday. Signing out unless there is service on the ridgetops. Follow us on SPOT.

Bob Marshall: In Montana!

We have arrived in Montana and are headed for a quick meal in Missoula before we hit the campsite by the trailhead. Keep watching for trip reports from our hike!

Bob Marshall Day 1: Heading Out!

We're off again hitting the road for our next 50 Miler. Everyone got up bright and early (too early for most) and we headed to Montana. I'd like to say we saw a lot, but back to my earlier comment...there was a lot of snoring coming from the cars.

Just about the time the hordes awoke, we entered Spokane. No trip through Spokane is complete without a trip to Dick's Hamburgers.

Everyone loaded up at Dick's on some of the best greasy burgers and shakes this side of the mountains.

Doug got an extra serving of tartar sauce courtesy of some of the locals. Everyone enjoyed the break and the meal. Now, we're making a run for the border and the next stop is Idaho! Montana here we come!

We are then going to Rusty's in Cashmere. Ordering burgers, shakes and fries.

We should be home close to 8PM so look for a last blog when we are one hour out.

Great hike, nice friends on the trail. Log another wonderful trip for Troop 466!

Golden Lakes - Angel Staircase

We made it up Angel Staircase to 8000'. We can see the world! Everyone made it up the steep 16 switchbacks.

Now we are headed down to Cooney Lake to catch some fish and have another wonderful dinner.

Boy is this fun!

Golden Lakes - Day 2

We are at Horsehead pass at 7600'. Our first day was great. We were on the trail by 10:30 and made it to Upper Eagle Lake where we made a Yakisoba for dinner. Kelly had his surprise dessert of cookies and Tootsie Pops.

No fish were caught at this first lake but tonight's Cooney Lake is full of fish.

The view from Horsehead is magnificent! We can see all Enchantments, Lake Chelan, North Cascades and east to the Columbia.

We probably won't have service till we are back in Pateros. Will let you know our ETA to North Bend.

Lots of bikes this time but they are really nice. Lammas too with the Girl Scouts.

Poor cell service so only one picture.

All is going well. See you back in North Bend.

Camp - Friday and Last Night

It's our last day of camp, our bags are packed and we thought we should share some of the last faces of camp. We will board the bus at 0930 and head north.

The boys used their Hullabaloo points to send 5 counselors into the lake in their full uniform.

We celebrated the hard working kitchen staff.

We really need to shave. This has been a long week of camp.

You might be able to see your son at the last night campfire.

Or here. We also were fortunate to have several parents join us for dinner and the final campfire.

Our day is done. A flag was retired.

Camp - Thursday

Tonight's theme is dining at summer camp Let's have dinner in the dining hall.

We have six tables in a dining hall that serves 540 scouts every night That is 10% of the entire hall for Troop 466.

Here are four of the tables.

Yes mom we do get a salad bar every dinner. The lines are long for all those greens. Important to KYBO (aka outhouse) success. KYBO = Keep Your Bowels Open and is the scout name for an outhouse.

The kitchen staff is friendly and efficient. Led by Rich, ex Air Force Sargent, and a team of dedicated scouters. The kitchen and dining hall is top notch at Camp Meriwether.

Tonight's dinner was spagetti, green beans, bread, milk, and apple crisp for dessert.

Stephen was a waiter tonight. He was getting seconds on spagetti for his table and proud of it!

Meet some of the kitchen staff. In 8 weeks they will feed over 4,800 scouts.

Here is a video of the troop in the dining hall tonight. Can you find your son?

YouTube Video

We even supplied the hall with extra tea we had when they ran out. Sharing is caring.

Camp - Wednesday

Wednesday is hump day we are halfway there.

Today is the time all the new scouts plus Eric, Stephen, Julian, Ryan and Shawn went on their Wilderness Survival merit badge overnight.

The boys get to bring their 10 essentials and only their clothes. They build a shelter for warmth and protection for the night to sleep in the woods near camp. Yes they spend the night all by themselves to know that they can survive. It's a nice night with cloud cover so should be great!

We thought we should share some photos of the parents at camp. Without their help, vacation time from work, patience and humor the week would never have been possible.

Jim our cook,

Chris our good humor man,

Khalil our shepherd of scouts between classes,

Chris our advancement chair and organization chief,

Jim our voice of reason,

Kelly our tireless basecamp leader,

Scott our limo driver,

and Doug our fearless leader.

Thanks parents (Carrie) for sending us a care package of cookies and banana bread. It really makes us feel good.

Now the older boys left in camp get to play CTF (Capture the Flag) with another troop.

What another wonderful day!

YouTube Video

Now we get to be the last troop on the beach with a campfire We always close down the beach those fireside stories, jokes and fun will last forever.

What will be in store for us tomorrow?
